07.14.08 Hotel Info for the Chowder CupThe Northern Conn. Wings have the following hotel assingment for the Chowder Cup during the weekend of July 24th-27th. The hotel is the Fairfield Inn Marriot in Dedham, MA. The rate this year will be $104.00 per night plus taxes with a continental breakfast included for all of our rooms. This is based on a two night minimum stay. 06.18.08 Scott Gainey comes to XavierXavier High School Press Release Headmaster Brother William, C.F.X. announces that Scott Gainey will become the new Head Varsity Hockey Coach at Xavier High School. “Mr. Gainey brings a wealth of experience and equally as important a philosophy of coaching that meshes perfectly with our mission at Xavier High School.” Gainey has 14 years of coaching experience at the high school level, including 9 years as an assistant and 5 years as Head Coach at Conard High School. Gainey stated his objective, “to guide student-athletes towards becoming responsible, respectful and accountable young men. I want to instill in my players the importance of self-discipline, work ethic and accountability while in a structured team environment. I am really looking forward to this relationship. I think it is going to be a really good match.” Gainey is also the president of the Northern Connecticut Wings Hockey Club and president of the Connecticut Lazers, both organizations in Simsbury. Gainey also spent a few years as a power skating instructor with the Florida Panthers working with NHL prospects while interacting with the teams coaching staff. Athletic Director, Anthony Jaskot, said, “We are excited to have Scott Gainey as our third head hockey coach at Xavier and know that he will carry on the tradition of excellence that Xavier High School is known for in its athletic program.” Jake Degennaro and Devin Rask will be joining the Xavier staff as assistant coaches. All three will continue with there current roles as coaches and management of both the Wings and Lazers programs. 05.16.08 Junior Schedules AnnouncedThe Northern Conn. Wings have announced the summer junior schedules. The teams will open up with training camp on June 28 and 29 from 12:30 - 3:30pm. A coach's recommendation is required for any new players who wish to try-out for one of the junior teams over this weekend. The summer season will start the following weekend, July 4 - 6, when we host our 3rd Annual Northern Conn. Wings Premiere Showcase. Teams attending over the holiday weekend include Champlain Valley Elite, Beantown Bullies, Powershack, and the Prep Selects. Both our Junior Premiere and Junior Gold teams will be participating in this tournament. The Junior Premiere team will be back in action on the weekend of July 18 - 20 at the Champlain Valley Elite Applebee's Junior A Summer Shootout in Plattsburg, NY. Over the same weekend, the Junior Black will open it's season at the Northern Mass Cyclones Junior A Tournament. The weekend of July 24 - 27 will be extremely busy for the Wings Organization, as all three Junior teams will be in action. The Junior Premiere and the Junior Gold will be at the John Cunniff Chowder Cup, while the Junior Black will be representing the organization at the EJHL Showcase in Marlboro, Mass. The Junior Gold and Junior Black will finish their season at our Northern Conn. Wings Junior A Summer Showcase, August 1 - 3. Other teams that will be making the trip to Simsbury for this weekend include: Mass Mariners, Champlain Valley Elite, and the New Enlgand Stars. 04.29.08 Summer Skills CampThe Northern Conn. Wings are running a Summer Skills Camp through July and August. The camp will be open to all youth hockey players from any organization, age level Mites-Bantams. The Wings JR. Premiere players who will be boarding here from the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League will be the instructors for the camp. The sessions are on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:30-8:00pm. The first session runs from July 8-24 and the second session runs August 5-21, the cost is $295 per session. 04.15.08 3rd Annual Golf TournamentThe 3rd Annual Northern Conn. Wings / Connecticut Lazers Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, July 21 at Blue Fox Run Golf Course in Avon, Connecticut. The price will be $110, which will include each players' greens fee, cart, dinner buffet, and 2 free drink tickets. Last years event was extremely successful, seeing over 100 golfers participate. Prizes will be awarded for the top 3 foursomes, longest drive, and closest to the hole. Once again, Viking Appliances will be a feature sponsor, providing the prize for the special raffle drawing. Wings would like to thank all of the players who came out to tryouts this past weekend. Nearly 200 players came out to the rink on Saturday and Sunday, trying out for teams at every age level. Wings have added the final tournament for the 1995 Bantam Minor team. They will be playing in the Hub Cup, August 1-3. The tournament is held out of the Bridgewater Ice Arena in Bridgewater, MA. 02.20.08 Westminster's Joncas and AOF's Doyle Join Wings Coaching StaffThe Northern Conn. Wings would like to announce the addition of two new coaches for the 2008 summer season – Westminster Varsity Head Coach Tim Joncas and Avon Old Farms Varsity Assistant Brian Doyle. Coach Joncas, who will be heading the Wings Junior A team, is in his first year as a head coach at Westminster after spending 2 seasons as a varsity assistant. Prior to coaching, Tim played his college hockey at Trinity College, where he was named captain his senior year and awarded the Coaches Award for Outstanding Leadership. This summer, Coach Joncas will be assisted by his current Westminster assistant Tim Quinn. Coach Quinn played college hockey at Amherst College where he was elected captain before beginning his coaching career as an assistant at Division III Wentworth Institute of Technology. Coach Doyle, who will be the head coach of the Wings ‘92/’93 team, is in his 10th year as the varsity assistant at Avon Old Farms. During his time at Avon, his teams have won 4 New England Prep School Championships as well as sent numerous players to top Division I and Division III colleges. Coach Doyle’s playing career includes 3 ECAC First-Team selections while at Amherst College. Brian Doyle is also currently the Athletic Director at Avon Old Farms. 02.07.08 Wings Tournament ScheduleThe Northern Conn. 01.22.08 SJHL players to join WingsThe Northern Conn. Wings staff recently returned from a successful recruiting trip to Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Their business was to recruit SJHL players for the summer Junior Premiere team which will participate in 3 elite tournaments : The 3rd Annual Northern Conn. Wings Junior A Summer Showcase, The Applebee's Champlain Valley Elite Summer Shootout, and The John Cunniff Chowder Cup. The Wings are expected to bring down 10 - 12 of the top players from the league to compete in front of nearly 30 Division I college coaches as well as numerous NHL and Division III scouts. These SJHL players will be mixed with some of the top Division I prospects from New England for the summer tournaments. 06.22.07 Bonino Drafted by San JoseBonino becomes first Northern Conn.
