06.18.08 Scott Gainey comes to XavierXavier High School Press Release Headmaster Brother William, C.F.X. announces that Scott Gainey will become the new Head Varsity Hockey Coach at Xavier High School. “Mr. Gainey brings a wealth of experience and equally as important a philosophy of coaching that meshes perfectly with our mission at Xavier High School.” Gainey has 14 years of coaching experience at the high school level, including 9 years as an assistant and 5 years as Head Coach at Conard High School. Gainey stated his objective, “to guide student-athletes towards becoming responsible, respectful and accountable young men. I want to instill in my players the importance of self-discipline, work ethic and accountability while in a structured team environment. I am really looking forward to this relationship. I think it is going to be a really good match.” Gainey is also the president of the Northern Connecticut Wings Hockey Club and president of the Connecticut Lazers, both organizations in Simsbury. Gainey also spent a few years as a power skating instructor with the Florida Panthers working with NHL prospects while interacting with the teams coaching staff. Athletic Director, Anthony Jaskot, said, “We are excited to have Scott Gainey as our third head hockey coach at Xavier and know that he will carry on the tradition of excellence that Xavier High School is known for in its athletic program.” Jake Degennaro and Devin Rask will be joining the Xavier staff as assistant coaches. All three will continue with there current roles as coaches and management of both the Wings and Lazers programs. 06.17.08 Nolan Schaefer to Run Lazers Goalie SessionThe Connecticut Lazers are proud to announce that Nolan Schaefer will be running the summer goalie sessions. The first session will be held Tuesday, June 24. 1999 - 1996 birthyears will be on the ice 6:30pm-7:15pm and the Bantam Minor, Bantam Major and AA goalies will be on the ice from 7:15pm-8:00pm. 05.27.08 Jersey SizingJersey sizing and equipment ordering will take place on Sunday, June 8 between 5:00pm and 8:00pm at the International Skating Center of Connecticut in Simsbury. Gateway Hardware will be sizing all jerseys and equipment for players to be sure that everything fits correctly. Our new uniforms will be Detroit Red Wings colors, with a red helmet and red shell. Various discounted equipment packages will be available. Turfer Athletics will also be on hand to display the new Connecticut Lazers line of apparell. Order forms for our new apparell will be available at this time. 05.07.08 Two Spots Remaining Squirt Minor TeamThere are currently two spots remaining for the CT Lazers AAA Squirt Minor Team(birth year 1999). The Squirt Minor Team is coached by Tim Viens. Tim Viens comes to the CT Lazers after being an Assistant Coach with Rocky Hill/Rham highschool. Tim played prep school hockey for Division I Kent School upon graduation, he went on to play Division I college hockey for Fairfield University. Tim was a stand out defenseman at Fairfield and was named captain of the Stags his senior year. Anyone that is interested in a tryout please contact Devin Rask. The camp will be open to all youth hockey players from any organization, age level Mites-Bantams. The Wings JR. Premiere players who will be boarding here from the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League will be the instructors for the camp. The sessions are on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:30-8:00pm. The first session runs from July 8-24 and the second session runs August 5-21, the cost is $295 per session. 04.15.08 3rd Annual Golf TournamentThe 3rd Annual Northern Conn. Wings / Connecticut Lazers Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, July 21 at Blue Fox Run Golf Course in Avon, Connecticut. The price will be $110, which will include each players' greens fee, cart, dinner buffet, and 2 free drink tickets. Last years event was extremely successful, seeing over 100 golfers participate. Prizes will be awarded for the top 3 foursomes, longest drive, and closest to the hole. Once again, Viking Appliances will be a feature sponsor, providing the prize for the special raffle drawing. The tryouts will be held Saturday, March 29 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm at the International Skating Center of Connecticut in Simsbury. The team, coached by Dan Giordano, will play in the Metropolitan Boston Hockey League, as well as playing other independent teams from the area. The '94 team is coming off of an extremely successful season in which they were able to reach the league semi-finals. Tim Viens comes to the CT Lazers after being an Assistant Coach with Rocky Hill/Rham highschool. Tim played prep school hockey for Division I Kent School upon graduation, he went on to play Division I college hockey for Fairfield University. Tim was a stand out defenseman at Fairfield and was named captain of the Stags his senior year. Tim will be coaching the 99 AAA squirt minor team. Rick Gates comes to the CT Lazers after being part of the Northern Conn. Wings staff in previous years. Rick is a former junior and college teammate of Lazers President Scott Gainey. He will be coaching at the AA level, assignment TBA. 01.29.08 Billet Families Needed for SummerThe Northern Conn. Wings are looking for families to host Junior players for the month of July. These players will be coming from Western Canada to play on the Northern Conn. Wings Premiere team. The Wings will be supplying a small stipend to off set any costs. We feel this will be a great experience for the younger players to be able to look up to and be mentored by Division 1 prospects.
